Miscellaneous Manuscripts

Copies of 16 different miscellaneous Pádraig O’Keeffe manuscripts which were given to Caoimhín Mac Aoidh by various people over the years.
Three of the manuscripts are dated, the earliest is from April 1941 and the latest dates from October 1953. Some of the tunes were written on the inside of open cigarette packets etc. The collection is made up of 16 manuscripts in total and contains the greatest number of melodeon tablature tunes in Caoimhín Mac Aoidh's Pádraig O’Keeffe Collection.

Traditional music collection

Even before she began writing her 'Songs of your county' column, Nellie Walsh was an avid collector of traditional music. This collection includes lyric sheets, tonic sol-fa, and staff notation made up of handwritten sheets, many photocopies, newspaper clippings, and two booklets of songs. The handwritten selections are largely on the back of envelopes, notes, letters, postcards, and many are on the back of Old Wexford Society minutes/memos, for which Walsh was Honorary Secretary. There is even one on the back of a photograph and one on the back of a pastry bag. These are largely Irish songs (and a few are even in Irish), but also includes Scottish, Austrian, American, and English traditional music. In additon to the songs, there are also letters asking if Nellie could identify songs (including a letter to Patrick Gallagher from the mayor of Boston, Massachusetts in 1985, Raymond Flynn), notes for herself on ballad history, performance lists, and a map of Lambay.

Horan Collection

The Horan Collection was sourced from Mrs. Katie Horan (nee O'Brien). It can be dated at least from 5 June 1942 to 22 March 1949. As with the O'Connor Collection it contains the information on how to read the tablature and ornament the tunes in terms of rolls and Pádraig's notion of "trills".

Songs from Co. Meath

Handwritten, typescript, photocopied printed, and newspaper clippings of songs from Co. Meath, mostly lyric sheets, including one programme to a concert. Mostly transcribed by Nellie Walsh herself, but others sent to her or clipped from newspapers. Some attached to letters addressed to Walsh.

Songs from Co. Waterford

Handwritten, typescript, photocopied printed, and newspaper clippings of song lyric sheets from Co. Waterford. On one song is written "Tipp or Waterford," indicated it could be from either Tipperary or Waterford. Mostly transcribed by Nellie Walsh herself, but others sent to her or clipped from newspapers. Some attached to letters addressed to Walsh. Many of the songs in this file are signed by or attached to a note signed by Roger Power and one packet of poems from two separate letters sent by Patrick Gallagher.

Music Education and Teaching

Includes student timetables from the Royal College of Music; a music catalogue ‘Selected Works from the Catalogues of the Universal Edition’ (Summer 1954); typed and handwritten music exam papers with annotated comments from examiners; lecture notes; model answers to exam questions; Derek Bell’s MusB degree parchment from Trinity College Dublin (29 Jul 1959); two photographs from the Ninth International Conference of the International Society for Music Education (ISME) which took place in Moscow (14 July 1970); articles about various aspects of musical composition; and newspaper clippings of obituaries of fellow students from Campbell College, Belfast.

Nicky McAuliffe Manuscripts

Fair copy transcriptions made of Padraig O’Keeffe’s music tablature by Caoimhín Mac Aoidh. The McAuliffe Collection was sourced from Nicky McAuliffe by Máire O'Keeffe who passed them on to Mac Aoidh. These manuscripts were not photocopied but were transcribed directly off the originals. Given his interest and abilities on the fiddle they were offered to Nicky McAuliffe by local past pupils of Padraig's. It can be dated at least from January 14th, 1951 to December 23rd, 1951.

Mickey Duggan Manuscripts

Copies of manuscripts originally owned by Mickey Duggan a former pupil of Pádraig O’Keeffe. Some of the original manuscripts are in Pádraig O’Keeffe's music tablature system. The tune ‘Sean Ryan's wonder hornpipe’ is written in staff notation.

Songs from Co. Kerry

Handwritten, typescript, and newspaper clippings of songs from Co. Kerry, mostly lyric sheets, with a few tonic sol-fa additions and one in staff notation on music manuscript paper. A few transcribed by Nellie Walsh herself, but others sent to her or clipped from newspapers. Some attached to letters addressed to Walsh. One song has a Galway song on the back and another has a Tipperary song on the back.
