Biographical history
Nellie Walsh (1913-1997) was a singer and aficionado of Irish traditional song who wrote a weekly column for 'Ireland's own' from the mid 1960s until the mid 1990s. 'Ireland's own' is a family-run Irish magazine published out of Walsh's home county of Wexford since 1902. Nellie Walsh died 8 June 1997.

In 1994 Walsh made a besquest in her Will as follows "I bequeath to the Irish Traditional Music Archive my Book of Ballads and my collection of Ballads and Traditional Songs." ITMA was informed of Walsh's bequest by her solicitors in June 1997. In September 1997 ITMA staff travelled to Walsh's home in Wexford and trasnferred the collection from there to its premises at 63 Merrion Square, Dublin.
