Songs from Co. Laois

Handwritten, photocopied printed, and typescript song lyric sheets from Co. Laois, including an envelope containing letter from the Laois County Librarian addressed to 'Mr. Nellie Walsh' and 18 photocopied printed poems (53 pages). Several photocopied typscript songs are signed by John Fitzpatrick and/or John Devoy. A few transcribed by Nellie Walsh herself, but others sent to her and some attached to letters addressed to Walsh.

Correspondence

Handwritten letters to and from Nellie Walsh, largely but not exclusively related to Irish traditional music, including her 'Ireland's own' column and her singing career. Some letters include requests for songs and submissions of songs, but are unattached to those songs. The earliest letter in this collection has '1895' handwritten later at the top, and addressed to Mrs. Margaret O'Nauralean (?).

Songs from Co. Carlow

Handwritten and typescript song lyric sheets from Co. Carlow, including one postcard. A few written by Nellie Walsh herself, perhaps some typed by her, and others sent to her.

Songs from Co. Offaly

Handwritten, typescript, photocopied printed, and newspaper clippings of songs from Co. Offaly, mostly lyric sheets but a few contain tonic sol-fa. Several written by John Nestor and composed by Bobby O'Driscoll, which are indexed by Walsh in the beginning of the folder. One song and its tonic sol-fa is written on a napkin. Mostly transcribed by Nellie Walsh herself, but others sent to her or clipped from newspapers. Some attached to letters addressed to Walsh, and several are signed by Thomas Dunne.

Songs from Co. Wexford

Handwritten, typescript, photocopied printed, and newspaper clippings of songs from Co. Wexford. It is no surprise that this is one of the larger collections, as Walsh was from Co. Wexford herself and the 'Ireland's own' magazine is published out of the same county. These are mostly lyric sheets, but several include tonic sol-fa or staff notation. Mostly transcribed by Nellie Walsh herself, but others sent to her or clipped from newspapers, and a few are printed leaflets with intricate headers. Some attached to letters addressed to Walsh.

Songs from Co. Limerick

Handwritten, typescript, photocopied printed, and newspaper clippings of songs from Co. Limerick, mostly lyric sheets, but one contains tonic sol-fa. A few transcribed by Nellie Walsh herself, but others sent to her or clipped from newspapers. Some attached to letters addressed to Walsh.

Songs from Co. Leitrim

Handwritten, typescript, and newspaper clippings of songs from Co. Leitrim, mostly lyric sheets, but one contains tonic sol-fa. A few transcribed by Nellie Walsh herself, but others sent to her or clipped from newspapers. Some attached to letters addressed to Walsh.

Songs from Co. Antrim

Handwritten, typescript, and newspaper clippings of songs from Co. Antrim. Mostly lyric sheets, but a few include tonic sol-fa, and one includes handwritten staff notation. Many written by Nellie Walsh herself, but others clearly sent to her. Some attached to letters addressed to Walsh.

The Londonderry air

Songs, newspaper clippings, and editorials about the tune 'The Londonderry air,' including a list of songs set to the air, letters from Nellie Walsh and letters responding to her request for information about the tune, several packets of sheet music in staff notation for songs composed to the air, and a collection of materials about its most famous interpretation, 'Danny boy.' Several of these are duplicates or photocopies of each other.

Bound individual sheet music in staff notation

Sheet music in staff notation, mostly handwritten onto music manuscript paper, but also contains printed or photocopied printed material. Several songs have lyric sheets or tonic sol-fa attached. These are undated but considering the format may have been used for her choral performances.
