The O'Connell Collection

The O'Connell Collection containing 212 tunes was sourced from Pat O'Connell (known locally as Patin, pronounced locally as Patch-een) Connell (without the O') a small farmer from the townland of Cordal. Patin was a pupil of Pádraig and kept his mss in two biscuit tins in the kitchen. He was a near neighbour of Pádraig and remembered him with great affection. He lent Caoimhín his collection in full which Caoimhín took away to Cork where he was living at the time. Caoimhín was not able to photocopy them but copied each one meticulously using stencils and Rotring drafting pens. The tablature was copied in this way and the transcriptions into staff notation were made subsequently. As Caoimhín finished off a batch of 20 or so mss he would post the originals back to Patin who received all in full in return.

Seán Reid Ephemera

Various items of ephemera including concert programmes, receipts and newspaper clippings. These relate to Feiseanna, Conradh na Gaeilge, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael (GAA) and An Cumann Gaelach, Queen's University Belfast. Included are a ‘Programme of Concert in New Cinema, Thurles, November 14th, 1935’ and ‘Clár Feis Charman 1936’.

O'Connor Collection

The O'Connor manuscript collection was sourced from Mrs Catherine (Kitty) O’Connor (née Horan) of Knockhorrin, Scartaglin. She originally lived at Dirreen, Scartaglin as a young girl when the manuscripts were written. Mrs O'Connor lent the collection to Caoimhín Mac Aoidh in 1984 and once copied they were returned to her in full. They consist of five school jotters which Mac Aoidh labelled, in no particular order, A, B, C, D, and E .

The Londonderry air

Songs, newspaper clippings, and editorials about the tune 'The Londonderry air,' including a list of songs set to the air, letters from Nellie Walsh and letters responding to her request for information about the tune, several packets of sheet music in staff notation for songs composed to the air, and a collection of materials about its most famous interpretation, 'Danny boy.' Several of these are duplicates or photocopies of each other.

Seán Reid Letters: 1937

Letters from various friends and relatives to Seán Reid who at this time is the ‘Assistant Road Surveyor’ in Ennis, Co. Clare. Letters are mostly addressed to John Reid, ‘Carmel’, Victoria Rd, Ennis, Co Clare. Letters are from, among others, ‘Jas. Leahy’, Mícheál de Búrca, E. J. McGrath, D[enis] Dunphy, ‘F? Dowling’, Tommie [Potts] (Potts, Tommie, 1912–1988), 6 Watkins Buildings, Ardee St, Dublin, John Potts, Mick Malone and Liam Ó Ceallaigh. Many letters contain references to musicians, feiseanna, céilí, music lessons, including a letter from ‘D Dunphy’ (6 May 1937) which encloses a programme for ‘Feis Thír-Eóghain 22nd-23rd May, 1937 in St Patrick’s Hall and Foresters’ Hall, Omagh.’ A letter from ‘Tommie [Potts]’ (22 July 1937) makes reference to a recent feis win by Reid ‘all of us were delighted to hear of your fiddling success’ and in a letter from John Potts (11 August 1937) he lists a number of his current uilleann pipe students including ‘Fr Jones’, ‘Bro Gildas’, ‘Mr Andrews’ and Mr Kearney’.

Jerry McCarthy Manuscripts

Copies of a set of manuscripts originally written by Pádraig O’Keeffe for his pupil Jerry McCarthy. Jerry played frequently with O'Keeffe before emigrating to New York where he spent some time working with Denis Murphy in the New York Zoo along with Rory O'Connor a whistle player from Doolin.

Bound individual sheet music in staff notation

Sheet music in staff notation, mostly handwritten onto music manuscript paper, but also contains printed or photocopied printed material. Several songs have lyric sheets or tonic sol-fa attached. These are undated but considering the format may have been used for her choral performances.

Bound collected sheet music in staff notation

Bound music manuscript books with handwritten sheet music collected by Nellie Walsh. Written in staff notation with lyrics, each song titled and titles collected in an index on the paper front cover of the book. Several have lyric sheets or staff notation inserted, so not all are well bound together.

Bound song books with tonic sol-fa

Small bound paper books containing song lyrics and occasional tonic sol-fa. Mostly handwritten by Nellie Walsh, but some books include inserts of newspaper clippings or typescript. Three are collections of typescript poems on coloured paper. These books are small memo books, day planners, notebooks, and contact books, mostly bound by cardstock, but a handful have thicker cardboard or plastic bindings. They are filled up with songs seemingly unattributed to certain counties or date ranges, but we can assume these fall between 1940s and 1990s.
