Songs from Co. Leitrim

Handwritten, typescript, and newspaper clippings of songs from Co. Leitrim, mostly lyric sheets, but one contains tonic sol-fa. A few transcribed by Nellie Walsh herself, but others sent to her or clipped from newspapers. Some attached to letters addressed to Walsh.

Songs from Co. Offaly

Handwritten, typescript, photocopied printed, and newspaper clippings of songs from Co. Offaly, mostly lyric sheets but a few contain tonic sol-fa. Several written by John Nestor and composed by Bobby O'Driscoll, which are indexed by Walsh in the beginning of the folder. One song and its tonic sol-fa is written on a napkin. Mostly transcribed by Nellie Walsh herself, but others sent to her or clipped from newspapers. Some attached to letters addressed to Walsh, and several are signed by Thomas Dunne.

Songs from Co. Sligo

Handwritten, typescript, photocopied printed, and newspaper clippings of (both clipped and photocopied clips) songs from Co. Sligo. These are all lyric sheets, except for one CD single artwork for 'Betty Reilly & the Escorts.' Mostly transcribed by Nellie Walsh herself, but others sent to her or clipped from newspapers. Some attached to letters addressed to Walsh.

Songs from Co. Waterford

Handwritten, typescript, photocopied printed, and newspaper clippings of song lyric sheets from Co. Waterford. On one song is written "Tipp or Waterford," indicated it could be from either Tipperary or Waterford. Mostly transcribed by Nellie Walsh herself, but others sent to her or clipped from newspapers. Some attached to letters addressed to Walsh. Many of the songs in this file are signed by or attached to a note signed by Roger Power and one packet of poems from two separate letters sent by Patrick Gallagher.

Songs from Co. Wicklow

Handwritten, typescript, and newspaper clippings of songs from Co. Wicklow. These are mostly lyric sheets, but several include tonic sol-fa. Mostly transcribed by Nellie Walsh herself, but others sent to her or clipped from newspapers. Some attached to letters addressed to Walsh.

Songs unattributed to specific counties

Song sheets, and the occasional tonic sol-fa, of songs sent to Nellie Walsh that she did not assign to a county and no county is immediately attributable. Many are about Ireland in general, or contain multiple counties which include Derry, Kildare, Antrim, Dublin. Two are religious poems/stories unrelated to Ireland, both sent by Captain P. Darcy, called "Shalom! Shalom!" and "Footprints in the Sand". Includes correspondence to Walsh refering to songs or poems to be included in her column, but unattached to the poems to which they refer.

Programmes, lecture scripts, song lists

Typescript programmes, scripts, song lists, and notes, including the script from Nellie Walsh's appearance singing on a radio show on 29 April 1957, several drafts of a write-up on collecting folk songs, and a 24 page booklet of poems and songs that were 'The subject of a lecture given by Mr. Seamus Murphy in November, 1981."

Correspondence

Handwritten letters to and from Nellie Walsh, largely but not exclusively related to Irish traditional music, including her 'Ireland's own' column and her singing career. Some letters include requests for songs and submissions of songs, but are unattached to those songs. The earliest letter in this collection has '1895' handwritten later at the top, and addressed to Mrs. Margaret O'Nauralean (?).

Pasted Clippings of Songs of your county

Selections of Nellie Walsh's 'Ireland's own' column, either clipped from or photocopies of the magazine, pasted onto thick card that look like they could have been part of a scrapbook. Several are full pages of songs with Walsh's comments, but some are clipped individual songs.
