Colm Ó Lochlainn was born in Dublin as William Gerard O’Loughlin to an Irish-speaking father who was a Kilkenny businessman-printer, and a Limerick mother from a family of printers. Having studied Irish in University College Dublin under Eoin Mac Néill from 1910 to 1916, and acted with the Theatre of Ireland, Ó Lochlainn taught in Patrick Pearse’s school St Enda’s and was at the time deeply involved in the Independence movement, especially as a publisher and printer. After the 1916 Rising he continued his Gaelic studies, graduated MA, continued his involvement in printing and publishing, and from 1933 to 1943 was an assistant lecturer in Irish and librarianship in UCD. In 1926 he founded the Three Candles Press in Dublin, which would become for decades a leading Irish imprint as well as a general printer, and which specialised in history, biography, topography, bibliography, music and Irish studies. Ó Lochlainn travelled and studied printing techniques on the Continent and designed an Irish-language type-font. From about 1928 to 1957 he was also editor, printer and publisher of the bibliographical journal The Irish Book-Lover. Co-founder of An Óige, the Irish youth hostelling organisation, in 1960 he was awarded an honorary D.Litt.Celt, from the National University of Ireland. He was married to Ailish McInerney; they had three children.

In music Colm Ó Lochlainn is remembered particularly for his two famous collections of English-language songs Irish Street Ballads (1939, reprinted 1946, 1952, 1956, 1958, 1960, 1962, 1965, 1967, 1978, 1984) and More Irish Street Ballads (1965, reprinted 1968, 1978, 1984), which were the chief source-books for the 1960s revival of interest in Irish traditional song. He himself was a singer, often appearing with his sister Úna on national radio in the 1920s, and a musician on piano, uilleann pipes, warpipes and harp. In the 1960s he introduced the traditional song series As Zozimus Said on the new Irish television service. He was also interested in Scottish Gaelic songs and edited and published a collection: Deoc-Sláinte nan Gillean: Dórnan Óran a Barraidh (1948). He was also the author of Anglo-Irish Songwriters since Moore (n.d., post-1947), later Song-Writers of Ireland in the English Tongue (1967), and occasionally composed song words and melodies. A Glaswegian of Highland and Irish descent, Geordie's lifetime involvement in song, ballad and poetry is reflected in his singing, collecting and songwriting.
His early years as a radio and television technician and later as a Modern Studies teacher, coupled to his passion for the outdoors have, in diverse ways, fueled and complemented his central interest in folk music; as a concert and folk club organiser, author and record producer.
For many years Geordie has collected songs, working with Hamish Henderson, Helen Fullerton and A.L. Lloyd. He has an interest that combines hearing the songs in the community and researching their background.
He has written song notes for numerous recordings along with album reviews. His first-hand experience has added greatly to his articles on the legacy of Hamish Henderson, edited by the late Paddy Bort, in the Gracenote Publications.
Geordie has sung at clubs and festivals in most corners of Britain and Ireland as well as Italy and the USA.

Bradshaw, Harry. (1947– ). Radio producer, researcher, record producer. Born Bray, Co. Wicklow. In 1965 he took up employment in recording at Dublin’s Éamonn Andrews Studios, then at film and sound work, while taking night classes in telecommunications and electronics. He joined RTÉ in 1968, where he did sound for Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin’s early RTÉ recordings, and Nóirín Ní Riain’s 1978 Seinn Aililiú. Associated with The Long Note radio programme, he became its producer in 1978, in this series devoting time to making field recordings of musicians throughout Ireland and to documentary features on traditional music subjects. He also produced a folklore series, Folkland, Music of the People and – his best-known achievement – The Irish Phonograph series, featuring 78 rpm recordings from the 1920s and ’30s and presented by Nicholas Carolan. The two also collaborated on the 1986 John McKenna – His Original Recordings. He produced the 1988 album Bunch of Keys which has the contents of nine acetate discs of uilleann piper Johnny Doran which were originally recorded in 1947; the 1990 Gravel Walks has Donegal fiddler Mickey Doherty. Both were Breathnach, Breandán 83 published by Comhairle Bhéaloideas Éireann. In 1989 he started his own label Viva Voce to market re-mastered 78s; the James Morrison – The Professor fiddle album was his first release, next was Fluters of Old Erin, then Michael Coleman 1891–1945, Packie Dolan and a Flanagan Brothers reissue. He worked half time on a joint RTÉ/ITMA project which transferred and catalogued the bulk of RTÉ radio’s traditional music archive tapes into a 300-cd catalogue designed to make the material easily accessible to the public. He was employed also by the ‘Ceol’ commercial music-heritage project in Smithfield, Dublin 1999–2001. He left RTÉ in 2003 and set up his own independent production unit providing specialist recording and remastering facilities and has produced a wide variety of titles, many in traditional music, for record companies and broadcasters.
